Random Thoughts and Ramblings From the Beach

On the beach: Radio slang for being out of a job. Origin unknown. Example: "Jonathan is on the beach."

Unfortunately, that is true. Last week, I parted company with WNHT and Summit City Radio Group in Fort Wayne. As someone on radio-info.com put it, it was a "belt tightening," as I was cut along with four other people. Jack Hammer, Buzz Maxwell, Rod Tanner and even the receptionist Bonnie lost their jobs along with me. Honestly, I was more upset about Bonnie being let go than even about myself.

Unfortunately, this is just part of the game we like to call radio. Especially being on air, you always keep in the back of your mind that one day you could go to work and be called to a meeting; when that meeting's over, you may not work there anymore. Granted, this is true in any business but it seems more so in radio. Everyday, you read in net news at All Access about how someone "exited" or "parted company" with their station and company. Sometimes it's because of something the jock or programmer did wrong but these days it seems it's more so because budget cuts. It's sad but, like any other business, radio goes through stages where the herd needs to be culled. Unfortunately, I was part of that herd.

Most would say (and some even have said to me) that I should be bitter and resentful toward SCRG and the people who run it because of the fact that I was let go. But I'm not. What would that accomplish? Nothing, except hardening my heart and making me a really sad person to be around. That's not at all what I want and I haven't allowed myself to become angry. Instead, I'm still on good terms with everyone there. I still speak to Mojo and the rest of the crew at Wild on a regular basis. I've been in contact with Bill Stewart (ops manager) more than once. All this means is an opportunity to move on to the next step in my life, wherever and whatever that may be. Speaking of, if you know of any stations that are looking or whatever, you can direct them to my online demo at http://www.myspace.com/radiojonathan2.

It's been a great two years in Fort Wayne. I've done and experienced things that I never thought would ever cross my path. I've fallen in love with hockey. I've made some great friends. I've even had my heart broken a few times but that's just part of life and I learned from it. But, lately, I've also become closer to God and I've become involved with a church for the first time since I was in high school. All in all, it's been great and I wouldn't change a thing that's happened.

I'm not quite sure where the road will take me next but there are a few options. I don't want to let any cats out of the bag yet but I have a couple of irons in the fire. Let's just hope one of them takes shape soon! In the mean time, I'll update this as often as possible, thanks to the Waynedale branch of the Allen County Public Library. Until then, may God bless and keep you.
