Reality Check

As we all know, Hurricane Katrina did extensive damage in Mississippi, Louisana and Alabama. I talked to my family and thankfully everyone is ok and accounted for. In our town (Philadelphia) there was plenty of damage but thankfully most everyone is alright.

The news websites and TV are showing pictures of the devistation like you wouldn't believe. It's horriable down there. Hundreds dead, billions of dollars in damage, homelessness, lack of electricity... I could go on and on. There are areas that will be without power for a VERY long time... I'm talking weeks, maybe even up to a month or more. I read a story about a man whose wife was literally pulled from his hands as their house was blown away. It's all very depressing. Please keep everyone down there in your prayers and thoughts. They can use all the help they can get.

Listening to the radio here in Fort Wayne, there was a certain afternoon radio jock who said something to the effect of what was left of Katrina was now "causing havoc" in our area. Let me tell you something: If I saw him right now, I'd deck him. I'd hardly say some rain and wind could be classified as "havoc." The things I mentioned above... that's havoc. I think we have it pretty easy compared to our neighbors in the south. You, "Sandy," are an asshole and in desperate need of a reality check. May the great hemoroid of life shine upon you.

  • I have lived to see an event happen that I thought someday would occur but not in my South. And that is the destruction of a major portion of our Country by a natural disaster. I thought it would be an earthquake in California...I never dreamed that it would be a hurricane in my own beloved Southland. The scope and breadth of this disaster is unimaginable...an entire area from Mobile, Alabama and extending beyond the New Orleans metropolitan area is gone,destroyed,non-existent.
And this disaster not only extends along the entire Gulf Coastline but also has destroyed many of the inland
towns and cities five hours inland from the Coast. President Bush toured the area today aboard Air Force One and called this the largest natural disaster to befall the United States in our Nation's history. Thank God every one in my family
that we know of has escaped with their lives. My brother has not heard yet from his oldest daughter and her family who lived just north of New Orleans. They left before the hurricane hit but have not been heard from. And my Mother has not heard from her relatives from Gulfport, Mississippi. We pray that they are well.
Even in my home area in East Central Mississippi we felt the fury of Hurricane Katrina...she was still a hurricane when she blew through Neshoba County, Mississippi which is probably 200 miles North of the Gulf Coast, and left a trail of destruction behind her that will take us a long time to recover from. The devastation along the Gulf Coast is beyond comprehension. The local and State governments cannot begin to handle the disaster. It may even supercede the resources of the Federal Government. Katrina did more damage to an entire region of the United States than if the area was nuked by Russia or China. And the long-term after effects will be equivalent to a nuclear disaster...thousands dead and injured, tens of thousands homeless and unemployed, tens of thousands of homes, businesses, and buildings destroyed or unusable, tens of thousands of refugees with no place to go, a large region of the country that is totally uninhabitable, an environmental disaster of unimaginable proportions. In just a few days since the disaster we have seen the frustration and desperation of those unable to escape before Katrina hit transform into lawlessness and violence. Looting is becoming rampant, armed gangs are running (or wading if you will) through the streets of New Orleans. Local police cannot even communicate with each other to know where to respond to. Their resources are far insufficient to deal with the situation. We are about to see something in this Country that has not happened since the Civil War. President Bush is about to set aside the authority of the civilian governments in and around the City of New Orleans and the Military will take over to restore order and control lawlessness. The area will be ruled by a Military Commander...Martial Law will exist. Military personnel with M-16's and Apache helicopters will be there to enforce laws and keep the peace. They will not arrest and detain looters, they will shoot them. The economies of the States of Louisiana and Mississippi will probably be wrecked. In my home State of Mississippi, right now we are loosing $500,000 a Day in gaming tax revenue due to the destruction of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Casinos. The Mississippi State Gaming Commissioner has estimated that even if all the Casinos decide to rebuild it will be at least four months before one could open. Multiply $500,000 per day by four months and you get the picture. And the affects of this disaster will eventually be felt in the parts of the Country that didn't even receive a drop of rain or feel the slightest breeze. Oil rigs and refineries in the Gulf Coast region have been shut down. Fuel will be in short supply and prices now will seem cheap compared to what will come in a few weeks or even days. Billions and billions and billions more of dollars will be necessary to rebuild the area...the States do not have those kinds of resources to spend. The Federal government will have to foot the bill and with the War on Terrorism draining the National budget how on earth can this be done! This is the America--this is the South that we have to live in today. It's amazing how your world can be turned upside down in the span of a few days. And the hell of it all is that we could have another hurricane just as bad hit us again in two weeks or a month or next year.
